Drawing and place workshop in Hydra

For descoverartists’ September residency in 2023, I facilitated a mapping exercise for the retreat’s residents as an introduction to the sensory experience of the island. We walked around the village and local features, gathering material that could inform the group project. I encouraged participants to consider the sensory experience of the walk and be aware of what they noticed, i.e., temperature, texture, colour, and fragrance. People collected flowers, broken pottery, rocks, pinecones, as well as sketches, rubbings and photographs.

In the next session, we reflected on our gatherings and came up with a series of made-marks that reflected our findings and eventually turned into a gestural map of the walk around the island.
