Drawing Deeply: People, Place and Time

In June 2023, I was accepted into a residency with The Museum of Loss and Renewal in Collemacchia, Italy. I spent a week with the seven other residents, artist and academic Danica Maier and The MolaR’s Tracy Mackenna and Edwin Jansen. The purpose of the residency was to delve deeply into mark-making as a tool to understand place. Over the course of workshops and walks, I developed a close interest in walking and drawing as tools for map-making. I gained a deep appreciation for the sensory aspects of observational drawing and how it is a form of connection. My work since this time has pivoted towards drawing and making as tools with which to understand my relationships with place. We learnt how artmaking is a means for finding location within geography and history. I am incredibly grateful for the residency and the relationships I formed over the short but fruitful week in the Italian mountains. Find our collective online publication here.
