Drawing Deeply: People, Place and Time
In June 2023, I joined Drawing Deeply, a residency with The Museum of Loss and Renewal in Collemacchia, Italy. I spent a week with the seven other residents and the artist and academics Danica Maier, Tracy Mackenna and Edwin Jansen. The purpose of the residency was to delve deeply into mark-making as a tool for understanding place. Over the course of workshops and walks, I developed a keen interest in walking and drawing as tools for map-making and generating knowledge. I gained an appreciation of the sensory aspects of observational drawing and how markmaking often develops unexpected connections. Since this time, my work has pivoted towards drawing as a tool for understading myself in space and as an action of developing deep reationships with place. I learnt how making can be a means for deepening location within geography and history. I am incredibly grateful for the residency and the relationships I formed over the short but fruitful week in the Italian mountains.
